Rooted in Care: The Making of The Lissome No. 5

An intimate Substack Live conversation on craft, clothing culture and storytelling as acts of relationality and care

Dear Precious People,

I’m excited to share with you the recording of our very first Substack Live – an expansive conversation between myself and Hardeep Kaur, host of The Lissome’s Weaving Beings podcast. We recorded this conversation to mark the launch of The Lissome No. 5: Rise Up Rooted, Like Trees, and to offer a window into the ideas and inspirations that shaped this new edition.

In this deep dive, we explore the central theme of the issue – resilience – not as a rigid show of strength, but as something tender, relational and rooted in care. Inspired by the words of Rainer Maria Rilke, “Rise up rooted like trees”, the issue invites us to ground ourselves, to connect and grow in ways that nourish both people and planet.

We speak about:

  • How the idea for this theme emerged in response to today’s times of upheaval

  • How myth and storytelling provide wide and grounding frameworks for understanding and navigating transformative times

  • How practices of resilience are expressed through clothing culture and craft

  • The role of embodiment in resilience, finding strength in our sensory awareness, inner coherence and somatic wisdom

  • Highlights from the edition, including interviews with Lily Cole and Michael Meade, a story of activist care and somatic resilience and a photographic essay on regenerative fibre practices and craft education in Portugal

  • And the wider invitation The Lissome holds: to build a culture of care in fashion and beyond

You’ll also hear reflections on the magazine-making process itself – how each edition is woven intuitively and in community, and how the magazine as a craft artefact in itself represents the values of The Lissome.

It’s a conversation that reflects the spirit of the magazine – reflective, hopeful and grounded in a sense of beauty and possibility. I hope you’ll enjoy listening.

The Lissome No. 5 is now available to order – we’d love to share it with you.
